Tips and tricks for replacing your office chair pneumatic gas lift
Should you need to replace a faulty gas lift post or change the existing one for a special height lift, you could discover it’s a bit tricky.
Usually, these components are designed to be an interference fit and are generally slightly tapered to give a tighter fit.
That means that they literally wedge together and if your existing chair is a few years old it can take a good deal of pressure to prize them apart.
To begin with try standing on the 5 star base and pulling upwards on the chair arms, be careful if it’s a plastic base as you don’t want to break it, so position your feet near the center of the base.
If it’s still won’t release try spraying the joints with penetrating oil or WD40 and allow it to soak in for a few hours.
Hopefully, that should loosen it but you may still need to apply pressure to the base. Try tapping it firmly but lightly with a rubber mallet, but don’t use an ordinary hammer as you could damage or mark the base.
If all else fails, you may need to get the manufacturer’s service engineer to change it, they carry a special drift tool designed for the purpose.
